Many street names in this suburb were named after a floral theme at the suggestion of resident Anne Edwards. This close was surveyed on 11 August 2004 and was registered with Cairns City Council on 31 August 2004. This street was named after Mr Alf Abel who was a local businessman. Abbott came to Cairns immediately after it was established to open a branch of his bank. This street was named in October 1876 after Henry Palmer Abbott the General Manager for Queensland of the Australian Joint Stock Bank.
